Why an EMS? (Environmental Management System)

The Sapphire Coast has a history of low population density and this has helped to keep our waterways clean.

As urbanisation increases so does the risk of pollution of our rivers, lakes and ocean.

We need to work together to maintain our water quality and this is the key reason for the adoption of an EMS by the oyster industry on the Sapphire Coast.

An EMS is a structured system designed to help the oyster industry identify and manage environmental impacts and risks.

Impacts and risks can arise from the oyster industry’s own operations or from external sources. During the preparation of an EMS, both oyster cultivation and catchment activities were assessed as to the impact they have on the environment.

Action plans have been developed to address impacts on the sustainability of the oyster industry.
